It can be very tempting to buy a vehicle abroad. However, importing it cannot be done on the fly. You must ensure that the vehicle meets Transport Canada’s regulations and that all the steps related to its import have been followed.
The Transport Canada contains a wide array of information about land, sea and air vehicles. All these vehicles, including trailers, are regulated. W2C can help you make sense of all the rules!
The import of a vehicle into Canada from the United States requires an export declaration with the U.S. Office of Export Control Cooperation. W2C will make this declaration 72 hours before the vehicle crosses the Canadian border. Our agents will help you complete the required forms and submit them on your behalf to the U.S. customs authorities (USCBP) together with copies of the vehicle registrations and the purchase contract.
U.S. Customs clearance must be obtained before crossing the Canadian border. Once we receive this authorization, we will file Form 1 and the declaration with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). All vehicles entering Canada must be declared to the CBSA and a Form 1 must be filed.
Form 1 will enable you to get an inspection form from the Registrar of Vehicles website for a fee. Following the inspection of your vehicle, if everything is in compliance with Transport Canada regulations, you will be able to obtain a plate from the licensing office.
Each type of vehicle (passenger car, trailer, aircraft, boat) has specific requirements and a specific method of customs clearance that must be followed. W2C’s agents will help you determine the correct procedure so as to avoid delays and ensure a hassle-free delivery.
To steer clear of unpleasant surprises, feel free to contact us before making your purchase. A vehicle that does not comply with Transport Canada regulations will be refused entry into Canada and will have to be re-exported or destroyed, representing a significant financial loss for the importer.
